Synopsis
'Incarnate' (2016), directed by Brad Peyton, attempts a fresh take on the supernatural horror genre by venturing beyond conventional exorcism tropes. Instead of religious rituals, the film immerses viewers in a unique form of 'eviction' – entering the mind of the possessed, reminiscent of a darker Inception. Peyton's cinematic technique occasionally crafts an impressive interior world, with 'dream' sequences that are visually compelling, yet the execution often lacks the consistency needed to fully capitalize on its intriguing premise. The film bravely explores the intersection of psychological thriller and demonic possession, a bold narrative ambition.
Aaron Eckhart's performance as Dr. Seth Ember is undoubtedly the film's most potent asset. He imbues the character with a palpable weariness, cynicism, and deep-seated trauma, delivering a nuanced portrayal of a man wrestling with personal demons while confronting a literal one. Eckhart significantly elevates the material, conveying themes of redemption and profound loss with conviction. While supporting performances from Carice van Houten and David Mazouz are competent, they don't quite reach the same intensity. 'Incarnate' is notable for its audacious attempt to expand the boundaries of supernatural psychological horror, even if its innovative concepts sometimes struggle in their execution.
